Microsoft has discontinued the Kinect Adapter, effectively killing the already-pretty-dead Kinect peripheral. The Kinect Adapter is the USB accessory required to connect a Kinect to the Xbox One S, Xbox One X, or a Windows PC. So if you want one, you had better buy one while stocks last.

The Kinect was originally released in 2010 as Microsoft’s answer to the Wii motion controls. Microsoft believed in the technology enough to bundle it with the Xbox One when it first arrived in 2013. However, in October 2017 Microsoft stopped making the Kinect. And now it’s Game Over.

Game Over for the Kinect Adapter

Months after discontinuing the Kinect Microsoft has stopped manufacturing the Kinect Adapter as well. This is required to connect a Kinect up to anything other than the Xbox Ones that have the proprietary port built into the console itself. Including the Xbox One S and Xbox One X.

After speculation due to stock shortages, a Microsoft spokesperson told Polygon, “After careful consideration, we decided to stop manufacturing the Xbox Kinect Adapter to focus attention on launching new, higher fan-requested gaming accessories across Xbox One and Windows 10.”

There are still some places selling the Kinect Adapter, but most people will have to resort to buying used on eBay. And paying the exorbitant prices now being charged for the accessories. The prices are shocking considering the Kinect Adapter was being given away for free for months.

Forget Kinect, Buy a VR Headset

This shouldn’t come as any great surprise to anyone. Once Microsoft decided to kill the Kinect it was only a matter of time before the Kinect Adapter followed. However, it’s still a wretched end for an innovative device that many people enjoyed using. I blame the rise of virtual reality.

Do you own a Kinect? Do you still use it? If so, how often? Do you understand Microsoft’s decision to kill the Kinect and the Kinect Adapter? Or do you think Microsoft should have plowed more resources into this innovative technology? Please let us know in the comments below!
